5 Minutes with an Event Executive

For the second part of our, ‘5 minutes with…’ blog series, we have caught up with a fantastic Event Executive that we placed in The Network Group over the summer, to find out more about her everyday experience of working in the Conferences and Events industry. This post is particularly useful if you’re considering a career in Event Management and want to know what to expect from your first job. Happy reading!

1.  How did you get into Event Management?

I decided to study Business and Event Management at university. I always enjoyed business studies at GCSE and A-level but wanted to add something extra to my degree. When I was looking around my university I heard my Programme tutor talk about his career in events and after that I just knew that’s what I wanted to do!

2.  What is a typical day in the life of an Event Executive like?

Lots of emails! I can easily spend over half my day just on emails!

I honestly feel as though there is no one typical day as each day in the office depends on the events that are coming up or have just finished. Before the event I either spend my time sending newly registered delegates registration information or contacting the delegates with additional steps to their registration process and venue, finalising any details. After an event, I spend a lot of time doing post-event analysis.  

3.  What is the best thing about being an Event Executive?

I love being onsite. Getting to meet all the delegates I have been talking to on the phone and emailing and seeing them enjoying the event is always really nice. But the best bit is seeing the actual event. This is always one of my favourite parts of working in events, the whole team has spent months preparing for this event and then seeing the event become a success is such a great feeling.

4.  What has been the most exciting project that you’ve worked on?

I think we are just about to start an exciting project, next year we are hosting two events in Amsterdam at the beginning of the year and maybe one in New York at the end of the year so for me, this is really exciting!

5.  What is the best advice you’d give to graduates seeking a job in the Conferences and Events industry?

Get as much work experience as you can! Even if it is just a one-day event that you volunteer on it is still a great example to show employers you have seen different events and how they work. The more experience you have in event-specific roles the more it will help you. Also, keep up to date with news and current affairs. I hated my lecturers and tutors telling me this throughout university but the biggest thing I have learnt is that within corporate events the main topic of discussion always involves aspects of current affairs.
