How Green are your Events?

Posted on 02 November 2020

Conserving the environment is now an important priority for many businesses across the world, and those within the events industry are no exception, they are constantly coming up with new ways of making events greener.

When we talk about being green, the ultimate aim is to make our actions sustainable – using less of everything now so that it lasts longer and choosing to use products, suppliers or procedures that have less of an impact on the planet.

This applies to all facets of events management, particularly the areas of water, energy, air, waste, transport and procurement. Many of these areas are interlinked and provide opportunities to make environmental and cost savings.

Some of the common ways of making sure your events are green are:

Online & Digital - Presenting information electronically and digitally including marketing materials, a comprehensive website, email updates and online registration.

Transport – Selecting a venue that’s easy to access by public transport with accommodation within walking distance. Where this is not possible - coordinate transport to and from the venue, and encourage delegates to make full use of rail and bus where it is available.

Paper – Ensure paper products used are environmentally sound and print double sided where information needs to be printed.

Catering – Use tableware, napkins, crockery, cutlery and glasses that are reusable not disposable and also look into composting of leftovers.

Recycling – Offer delegates the opportunity to separate their waste with clearly marked bins.

These are only a handful of the ways you can make your event greener; do you use all of these methods? How else do you ensure that your events are as environmentally friendly as possible?
