Developing your own personal brand

Posted on 01 October 2020

London 2012’s slogan, ‘inspire a generation’, seemed to have done exactly what is said. We were all certainly inspired by the great success Team GB had at the Olympics, and it gave us a reminder of our ability to reach achievable goals that we set ourselves, just as our athletes proved during the games.

With the understanding that you can reach your goals and fulfil your potential fresh in your mind, we wanted to remind you of some of the ways you can bring out the best in you to accomplish your career ambitions.

It might be daunting looking for a new position, but developing your own personal brand is a very simple, yet hugely significant step if you’re going for gold!

According to Malcolm Levene, who has been a branding coach for 20 years, you need to take the ‘Inside-Out’ approach in developing your personal brand. This involves acknowledging who you really are on the inside and learning how to express it on the outside. In other words; your attitude, values, behaviours and self-esteem should be mirrored by your appearance, body language, verbal articulation and demeanour.

Perfecting your brand could be extremely beneficial in securing an exciting new job opportunity because having an authentic personal brand allows others to experience your confidence and sense of purpose.

One of the components of your personal brand that could use some special attention, particularly in the case of attending interviews, is the use of your body language. A large percentage of how we communicate is actually non-verbal, and there are many clues our body language gives away all the time. For instance, if you appear hesitant, look puzzled and fail to make adequate eye contact you may be considered as lacking in ability.

It is always important to start your interview with a firm handshake and smile, never forget that first impressions count! During your interview you should sit up straight making sure your posture shows you are relaxed but interested, with plenty of eye contact with the interviewer(s). Nod your head and use hand gestures to support your words and give them meaning.

These are just a few of the ways that can help you on the road to accomplishing your career ambitions.
